2 Months Prior to Moving Day:

  • If you are going to use a mover, start getting estimates.
  • If you are moving yourself, check out the cost of at least two truck rentals.
  • Choose a mover or truck rental company.
  • Create a floor plan for furniture placement in your new home.
  • Remove clutter that you will not be taking to your new home.
  • Start a “moving” file with all your paperwork.
  • Arrange for school transfer paperwork.

6 Weeks Prior to Moving Day:

  • Go to local post office and fill out change of address card.
  • Make arrangements for storage if necessary.
  • Ask doctors for referrals, and obtain all medical records if moving out of the area.
  • Clean all closets and cabinets.

3-4 Weeks Prior to Moving Day:

  • Start packing boxes.
  • Get insurance policy for your new home and ask insurance company about coverage on your possessions during transit.
  • Collect all important financial and personal documents and make a note of what may need change of address forms filled out.
  • Dispose of items that can’t be moved, such as flammable liquids.
  • Arrange the moving in and out use of elevators (if in a condo building).
  • Hold a garage sale.
  • Arrange for child and pet care during the move.
  • Line up any services you’ll need for your new home; i.e. painters, carpeting, lawn care. Ask your J.W. Reedy agent for referrals.

2 Weeks Prior to Moving Day:

  • Return borrowed items; library books, friend’s yard tools.
  • Cancel newspaper delivery.
  • Notify credit card companies.
  • Order final readings on utilities.
  • Arrange for disposal of items not being moved.
  • Put together a file folder for new owners with manuals and warranties.
  • Pack a travel kit with prescriptions, personal items needed for moving day.
  • Put together a moving day supply kit of cleaning products needed. Make sure you include toilet paper, paper towels, and paper plates and plastic silverware too.
  • Pick up laundry from cleaners.
  • Get change of address cards ready to mail to friends and family.

1 Day Prior to Moving Day:

  • Disconnect and prepare major appliances for the move.
  • Set aside anything that should be loaded in your car and not the truck./li>
  • Pack a box of items that will be needed first at the new house. Clearly mark this box a "Load Last".
  • Obtain cashier’s check for the mover.
  • Confirm arrival time of your moving truck.
  • If moving yourself, dismantle beds and large furniture.

Moving Day:

  • If using a mover, make sure someone is at the old house to answer questions.
  • Read your bill of inventory carefully before signing. Keep your paperwork in a safe place.
  • Supervise loading and unloading.
  • Check your belongings carefully.
